Predatory fish such as muskie zero in on vibrations made by injured or swimming prey whether it be on or in the water. It's how these fish locate a food item long before they have visual contact. Crank-bait fisherman have been attracting muskie using vibration in the form of swimming crank-baits & spinner-baits that incorporate blades/lips. All achieve the same goals; vibration and movement. Capitalising on this point will increase your chances of attracting interest from a nearby muskie. Covering water is the key to success.
The next step in the process is convincing the muskie that the fly is a meal. In my opinion, flies have this advantage over conventional tackle at close range. You just need the muskie to see your fly.
NEW for 2011 is the remodeled Swimtrue-Acoustic. Now it's mostly synthetic with a new lip design. These two points have greatly added to its longevity but more importantly its swimming action has improved to the point where I have decided to discontinue the DJ range. There are two main reasons for this - first is the casting of these flies. The DJ is nearly twice the weight of the Swimtrue-Acoustic. This alone makes a big difference at the end of the day. Equally, the changes I've made to the lip design, in my opinion, have greatly improved its vibration and action compared to the Swimtrue- DJ.
Swimtrue-Acoustic Musky Flies come equipped with a large rattle encased between 3D eyes. The lip on this fly moves the head with the body following from side to side; this in turn activates the rattle. Just to shed some light on this point, most other flies with rattles fitted work one click at the start of a strip and once at the stop. At a guess, a two foot strip of a Swimtrue-Acoustic gets you over fifty clicks- that's more like a hum than a click. This point alone makes this fly one of the loudest sub-surface flies available. Now add a large 9" body that has a slow sink rate at rest. Also unique to this fly, is its lip design which allows you to custom bend the lip to change the action of the fly. Now you know what I'm thinking - if there's a muskie nearby, she'll come and have a look.
Half the battle right there, the rest is up to you!
